For 1,500 Quincyans to provide clothing and shelter during the harsh winter of 1838-1839 to more than 5,000 members of the mormon Church was an extraordinary act indeed. In modern-day terms the act would be equivalent to our current population taking care of approximately 150,000 men, women and children in need. This act has been called one of the greatest examples of humanitarian service in the history of our country.
