People Will Refuse to Believe Truth and Instead Adhere to Fables & Falsehoods Before the Second Coming

Sign 65 out of 100: People Will Refuse to Believe Obvious Truth and Will Instead Adhere to Fables and Falsehoods

This prophecy of conditions shortly preceding the Second Coming of Christ needs little explanation. When people get sufficiently wicked and selfish, they no longer think rationally. Indeed, wickedness does not promote rational thought. In the face of social trends and political posturing that, to the rational mind, will obviously lead to the destruction of society as we know it, with its builtin safeguards for human freedom and use of agency, such people stand aghast at truth and moral principles. They flush in anger at those who advocate the standards of the Bible and the gospel of Christ as the basis for the survival of society. Paul, the Apostle, prophesied this stance as follows (bold added for emphasis):

2 Timothy 4:3–4
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

We often apply these verses to the gospel and the tendency of the spiritually blind and deaf to reject its teachings and blessings. This is certainly the case. However, no doubt these verses can be applied also to common sense and rational thought processes in all matters relating to the governing of nations and communities as well as to standards to which the media and businesses should be held accountable.

The “teachers, having itching ears” and “fables” mentioned by Paul can certainly include the peers of those who would have the government pass unrighteous or unwise laws, as well as the peers  and fans of Hollywood and other media production centers who insist on the “anything goes” philosophy for entertainment. It can likewise apply to leaders of companies, small and large, who counsel together in darkness to engage in dishonest business practices.

These things can and do also apply to individuals and families. The “sound doctrine” that family is “the fundamental unit of society” (“The Family, A Proclamation To The World,” September 23, 1995) is being undermined and ignored, as more and more discount formal marriage and simply live together and have children. The “fables” that accompany the redefining of marriage and family trap many who fall into the web of walking in their own ways (D&C 1:16) and ring hollow in spiritually deaf ears as the disintegration of society accelerates.

The “sound doctrine” that we are literally offspring of God (Acts 17:28–29), that He has “a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s” (D&C 130:22) is ridiculed and railed against by religionists with “itching ears” who fail to understand the Bible correctly and study to teach that which is popular and will increase their personal wealth. As stated many times in the true teachings of our church, until we understand who God is and what He is, we cannot understand ourselves.

It is obvious, even to the casual observer, that the rampant sexual immorality prevailing now throughout the world is undermining the stability of society and is devastating the future. Yet people in large numbers continue to adhere to fables and falsehoods that seem to give license to their irresponsible and sinful behaviors.
