Recipe Wednesday: Graham Burgers and Tangy Coleslaw

Welcome once again to our weekly recipe post! This week we’re gearing up for summer with two recipes from Kelly van Orden Dalley’s cookbook Home Cookin’. As usual I picked these recipes because of the small number of ingredients and directions. Maybe I’m a minimalist that way, or just busy and don’t have time to cook dinner for an hour and a half. Graham Burgers offers a twist on classic hamburgers that is absolutely delicious. No buns needed for this dish that will satisfy every “meat and potatoes” person in your family.

Graham Burgers

1 1/2 lb. hamburger

1 cup crushed graham crackers

1/2 cup milk

1 egg

2 tsp. dehydrated onion

Make patties and fry until done. Cover with brown gravy and serve.

Brown Gravy

2 Tbsp. butter

2 Tbsp. flour

1 cup water

1 beef bouillon cube

Heat above ingredients with burger drippings in frying pan until thick.

If, like me, you are excited about the fresh veggies that are starting to appear in gardens and markets, the Tangy Coleslaw is a tasty way to put them together.

Tangy Coleslaw

Cabbage, chopped

Carrots, grated

Onion, chopped

Peppers, chopped

Cauliflower and broccoli, chopped (optional)

Toss together and add dressing. Cover and chill.


1/4 cup sugar

3 Tbsp. vinegar

2 Tbsp. vegetable oil

1 tsp. celery seed

1/2 tsp. salt

Whisk together.
