Lie: You need to experience sin in order to understand the negative consequences so that you can warn others.

A favorite among the lies Satan whispers, the illusion that sinning will actually aid us in helping others is a trap many fall into. Yet this trap is only a half-truth. While it is true that helping others is a good thing, the deception comes in convincing us that we cannot help others without first succumbing to, and therefore understanding, the sin.

In this lie the only ones who could effectively help others overcome their sins would be those who have committed that sin themselves. Yet if this were a reality, then Jesus would not have been able to warn or teach anyone a single thing. Society has no shortage of examples of people who have destroyed their lives through sin - but in the end, it is from the one who had no sin that we can learn the most.

--------------------------------------------

The Master Deceiver: Understanding Satan's Lies and How to Resist Them is a straightforward guide filled with clear doctrine and tailored tools that will help you develop your personal arsenal in your battles against Satan. Author David Stitt provides specific, customized strategies to help us combat Satan's deceptions, and outlines many of Satan's powerful lies so that you can be prepared to meet them. Let these strategies boost your confidence and help you learn to rely on divine help to triumph over the daily tides of temptation.

 Reviews-

We live in a world full of clouds and confusion. Some would have us believe that there is no Satan at all, that he is a myth and that we don't need to be on our guard. "The Master Deceiver" by David J. Stitt reminds us that Satan is a very real entity and is talented at his job, which is to distract us from our purpose here on the earth and to keep us so confused, we aren't able to focus on our eternal worth.

The book outlines some of the common lies we are told by the opposition, including:

A little sin is okay.

You're so spiritual, you can resist temptation.

Being obedient is too restricting.

You aren't worthy of the Atonement, so it's okay to sin. It's all hopeless anyway.

The author then proceeds to refute each of these lies, telling us the real truth.

We learn that the opposition will generally insert a piece of truth into his lie, hoping that we'll concentrate on the truth and let the lie just roll over us. Just as the master painters and musicians are the most talented at what they do, Satan is even more talented at his job and will use his influence to keep us from feeling our Heavenly Father's spirit. In fact, when we say "there is no devil," we are feeding right into one of his traps, for it is he who tells us there is no devil.

This book is filled with scripture references and quotes from general authorities that remind us that we are more powerful than the forces of evil, when we are brave enough to resist the temptations that come our way. Evil can only have influence in our lives as we let it, and we can build up our reservoirs of spiritual strength so we can withstand the buffetings of the world.

You would think that a book written about Satan would be frightening, but David J. Stitt has carefully constructed this book in such a way that you are learning about the tools of the opposition without feeling weighed down or frightened. He uses the Spirit of the Lord to teach us the things we need to know in a safe environment. I was very enlightened by this religious nonfiction book and would heartily recommend it to anyone who is feeling as though they aren't strong enough to resist the temptations in their lives.

There are great scholars who can write and speak on the danger of listening and giving into temptation. While these scholars are valuable, at times they are hard to understand. David J. Stitt uses his insight to bring his subject to a level that is easy to understand, without being trite.

In this book, David goes through seven lies. The lies are not profound or complex, but are gripping in their simplicity. One of the lies that is discussed is "You need to experience sin in order to understand the negative consequences so that you can warn others." While this is a common perception, it is only a half-truth. I do not need to smoke or drink to know and understand the negative impact these activities would have on my life.

The "lies" segment of the book is only a small portion of the entire work. After exposing the lies, Stitt spends time offering hope and comfort to the reader. He does this with short sections of easy to remember phrases to help in personal battles with temptation and sin. This is not the same old advice that is handed out on Sunday, but rather it is full of insight and encouragement.

Each chapter has something to offer in overcoming temptation and the constant whispers of the Master Deceiver. He points out that it is part of life to be tempted. Just because one is tempted to do or say something does not make them a bad individual. Rather it makes them mortal. David explains that hearing the lie is not the same as acting on the lie.

Stitt gives the reader several suggestions on how to build personal arsenals against the constant bombardment of lies and temptations. It is nothing difficult or profound, but logical and helpful. The greatest weapon one can have is truth. This is a book that is easy to understand and is filled with comfort and encouragement for the reader struggling for a moment of peace and understanding.

This book is for everyone who has ever been tempted (and that's everyone). David offers hope by reminding readers that temptation is a necessary part of life and assuring that it is not wrong to feel tempted, only to fail to resist. This book exposes Satan's evil lies and offers excellent strategies to help us overcome. Don't expect the same old advice you have always heard before. David provides some new insights and easy-to-remember phrases that are sure to make your own battles a little easier.
