"I'll tell you what, " Daddy said, taking Bodi's hand and giving it a squeeze. "Because I'm going first, when I die and see God, I'll send you a message.
"You will?" Bodi asked, surprised. "And what message will you send me?"
Daddy didn't answer right away. He appeared to be deep in thought. "I'll send you a feather," he finally decided.
Bodi had hoped for something a little more spectacular.
"I want you to remember something," he told her gently. "I will always be with you, no matter what. Not even death will change that. But most of all, and even more important, no matter how bad things get, God will always be there for you. "
Life is beautiful for fifteen-year-old Bodi Brooks. She has a wonderful family, a loyal friend, her poetry, her music, and best of all, her daydreams. Everything in her life is perfect...except for school. And her bratty cousin Staci. And that annoying boy, Syd. And the fact that the most handsome boy in the world, Freddie, doesn't know she exists. And, of course, the Vietnam War. Other than that, though, Bodi has no complaints.
Just when Bodi feels life is at its best, adversity strikes. When a quick succession of tragedies crush Bodi's perfect world, Bodi is left with a pile of broken dreams as well as faith-threatening questions. Does God exist, or is he really only the product of someone's pitiful yearning and imagination? Can people be trusted, or will everyone sooner or later break their word? Do miracles really happen - and if they do, can they happen to someone like her?
In this touching story, the reader will learn with Bodi that although life doesn't always turn out the way we want, it doesn't mean that it can't still be good. Against an Amber Sky is the story of a young girl who learns the importance of integrity and comes to feel the love of God as she discovers the reality of miracles.
Reviews-
The year is 1971 and Bodi Brooks is fifteen years old. The biggest problem in her life is her mean math teacher. She has friends, a great family and she's an aspiring poet. Bodi thinks she has a great life. However, things never stay the same. This is a story about growing up, overcoming problems, accepting tragedy.
I thought this book was very well written. The words seem to flow off the pages and create imagery so powerful that I could truly see the characters. This was not written as an LDS book. In fact, it may not be. But it is a story of Christian values, integrity and it is a testimony that God lives. I think that there is probably more to this account, I'm sure there will be a sequel. I hope there will be - because I really want to know how Bodi's life turns out.

15-year-old Bodi Brooks loves life on her family’s farm. She’s got a great family, good friends, and a crush on one of the cutest boys at school. But with the onset of the Vietnam War, Bodi’s life turns upside down in ways she’d never dreamed of.
Close Post
Bodi Brooks is a daydreamer. Her favorite place to sit and think is the old chicken coop, especially in the early pre-dawn hours of the morning. It’s good she has a place to contemplate life because with the onset of the Vietnam War, things are definitely getting more complicated for this 15-year-old. But life is good: she’s got a loyal best friend, a helpful family, and an interesting summer job. Then, when it seems like all is well, everything changes and Bodi discovers just how important life can be.
Author H.R. Holm’s is a great writer. Against an Amber Sky isn’t your typical Mormon fiction fluff - it’s not so made-up and idyllic as your traditional fiction. Holm’s has made Bodi and her family into likable characters with real issues, so it’s easy to identify with their situations. I enjoyed the book as a whole, but was let down at the end because it seemed like Holm’s hadn’t thought up a way to tie up loose ends and have a meaningful message. My first thought when I finished the book was, “So, what was the point of the story?” Holm’s spent a lot of time in the beginning of the book detailing Bodi’s life, but it seemed like the book came to a very abrupt end.
But, like I said, the book was well-written and it was an enjoyable read. I would recommend this book especially to the teenage crowd because H.R. Holm has done a wonderful job depicting teenage life.
I was extremely impressed with this book! H. R. Holm has a way of making you feel like you’re living the life of the main character right alongside her. Once you pick it up, you won’t be able to put it down. I recalled experiences in my own life that were similar to hers. When I finished the book, I was ready for the sequel. Only one problemthere isn’t one yet! Please, H.R. Holm, give us a sequel! Congrats on a job well done! Two huge thumbs up and five stars!

It is well written. The author has a way of pulling you in to gain a fondness and closeness to all the characters while keeping the constant interest of the reader.
I appreciate the main character. She is loveable and humble and gracefully handles the hard lessons of life.
Besides being a great story, the book includes some beautifully written poetry, which the cover designer cleverly wove into the artwork on the inspired cover.
I have had similar experiences and miracles in my own life, so I can relate to this story. Once you begin reading, you will have a desire to finish the whole book in one sitting. It has great moral value and is a step above most novels available today. I applaud it!

I am 14 years old, and I really loved this book. It was a mix between faith, humor, trust, and hope. It was very well thought up and I really hope H. R. Holm writes a sequel.

This is an engaging story of a teenage girl growing up in the late sixties/early seventies finding herself and determining her path in life. Although it is about a teenager, it is universal in the audience it can inspire. I loved the story because it deals with good values, difficulties, faith, and hope. There are heart-warming and funny moments that we can all relate to. I found myself wondering what Bodi was going to do next! I would recommend this to all ages!
