Join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand. -Ezekial 37:17
Throughout history, it has been common practice to use more than one witness to establish a fact or truth. Out of love for his children, God revealed the same truths to prophets of different countries and different centuries as a witness that his words are true. These men, through the guidance of God, kept records that are now available to mankind in his search for truth.
In One in Thine Hand, Lynn Price compares scriptures and doctrine across the Old and New Testaments, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. Through these comparisons, the reader can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for God's revealed truths. Readers will also clearly see how each of these witnesses testifies of the divinity of Jesus Christ and the truthfulness of his teachings.
This readable, easy-to-use guide to understanding gospel truths is a valuable resource for people of every faith.
Reviews-
Upon seeing the title of this book, I was reminded of a novel by the same title, printed some years ago. I no longer own a copy of that novel. I wondered if Horizon had decided to republish it.
In fact, this book is a grand compendium of Mormon doctrine, arranged in a way sure to please any student or teacher looking for a wide overview and lots of source material. Its eighteen chapters are subdivided into various aspects of a large theme, and then the author presents evidence for the teaching from the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price.
Each chapter begins with a "Tenet" -- an introductory statement expressing the belief of the Church, as viewed by the compiler, on each subject. Let me give you an example, as it will help the reader understand how this book is put together:
I'll describe Chapter Five. It is titled "The Need for a Redeemer: The Birth, Death, and Second Coming of Christ Foretold." Here is the Tenet: "Because of the fall of Adam, man was separated from our Father in Heaven both physically and spiritually. A Redeemer was required in order for us to overcome these separations. Christ was chosen to be that Redeemer. His birth was foretold by prophets in all the scriptures. His death was also foretold, as is his Second Coming."
We are then presented with five subdivisions, each with citations from, and sometimes brief comments about, the four Standard Works -- A) The Fall of Adam; B) Christ was chosen to be the Redeemer of mankind; C) The birth of the Saviour foretold -- the prophecy fulfilled; D) Christ's death was prophesied and foreshadowed; E) Christ's Second Coming was also prophesied.
Some may observe that there is very little original material here. That is correct. But what makes this book so valuable is the ease with which it presents topics and then supplies an abundance of scriptures to help both the teacher and the student. How many have searched for scriptures on a given subject, and given up in frustration?
And let me mention that the physical presentation of the book is quite nice. Many will remember Horizon's earlier publishing efforts -- rather dull hardcovers, poorly edited and sometimes hard to fathom. Putting this book in the capable hands of Cedar Fort has ensured that we have here a sturdy, attractive book, that will hold up under years of use.
Such a resource can be a real boon to the interested reader. Those who give Sacrament meeting talks, those who teach Sunday School or Seminary or Institute, and those who just want to broaden their scriptural knowledge, will benefit from Price's work. "
