Authors teach about “Finding Life After Losing One”

Finding-Life-After-Losing-One_9781462117857“Finding Life After Losing One: A Parent’s Guide for When a Child Dies” is a book written by two Corvallis residents, Nikki King and Alice Rampton, who each experienced the death of a young daughter.  Alice and her husband, Mark, lost their daughter Lora in 1986 to cancer, while Nikki and Eric King’s daughter, Taylor, died in 2012 in a tragic car accident. Following Taylor’s death, Nikki approached Alice for support during the initial grieving process and during several conversations, the idea of collaboration on a book was formed.

Nikki comments, “This is not your typical book on grief management as it is written for parents by parents. We interviewed over twenty parents who had lost a child. Several of these parents were from Corvallis and others were from across the United States.”   Insights from these interviews were incorporated into the end of each chapter.  Children of these contributing parents died at various ages; one lived only a few hours while others lived into their forties. The cause of their deaths varied also and included accident, cancer, suicide, disease, and murder.

Guilt, intimacy, emotional triggers, dealing with anger and regret, healthy healing, what to say and what not to say to a grieving parent, and ways to memorialize your child are some of the topics covered in the book.  Suggestions are included for friends and family members who want to offer appropriate support to those grieving. Alice shared the main reasons they wrote the book was so that other parents would know that they are not alone in the world of grief.  “Losing a child is one of the hardest trials experienced by any parent and we want others to know they are not alone.  Everyone grieves in their own way, but it helps to know that many emotions felt by a grieving parent have been experienced by others. We hope the book will bring comfort and encouragement for grieving individuals from all walks of life.”  Their book is a survival manual for parents and families who have lost a child. Nikki and Alice encourage their readers to write in the margins, add personal notes, and highlight suggestions that make sense.
