Erwin E. Wirkus

While presiding over the Austria Vienna Mission, Erwin Wirkus was called to organize the Iowa, Des Moines Mission, which included the Nauvoo, Illinois area. There, The Nauvoo Stake was approved to become the thousandth stake in the Church.

Taking special interest in the Joseph and Emma Smith story, he wrote this memorial from Emma's point of view to give readers a clearer picture of what she suffered and how lonely she might have felt for Joseph and the Church those last days of her life.
