Shirley Rees was born in Salt Lake City. She attended the University of Utah for three years, took a leave of absence to marry and raise six children, then returned to school and graduated from BYU with a degree in education. For eighteen years, she taught forth, fifth and sixth grade students in Salt Lake and then in Star Valley, Wyoming.
Shirley says, "While teaching, I fell in love with children's literature. When I retired, I knew I wanted to write for young people. This work was inspired by journals and family histories written by my pioneer ancestors who helped colonize Southern Utah - pioneers who went about their lives with faith and courage. My aunt sent me a detailed description of her grandfather's farm. The farm in Hannah Stands Tall is based on that description. Most of the characters and events, however, are fiction, as is the town of Brockton."
Shirley now lives with her husband and two cats in the quiet town of Bedford, Wyoming. Along with writing, she enjoys reading, genealogy, snorkeling vacations, football games, and visits with her children and grandchildren.
